It examines the country’s pre colonial history, colonial era experience, history of liberation struggle, and post independence nation building principles. Students will gain the analytical tools to understand Eritrea’s governance philosophy, its resilience against external pressures, and its central role in the Horn of Africa.

Eritrea: Governance, Policy, and Political Thought

This advanced seminar examines Eritrea’s foreign policy orientation, strategic priorities, and global interactions within Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. Students will critically analyze regional alliances, conflicts, and diplomatic trends shaping Eritrea’s external relations — with an emphasis on sovereignty, Red Sea security, and global power competition.

This course builds on foundational knowledge of Eritrean history by examining the post-independence governance system, political institutions, policy evolution, and philosophical principles guiding national decision-making.
